The world needs copper, and there is lots of it just lying around

So recycle your old stuff

Must be a business opportunity here: We must have a lot of expertise in this regard.
Just need to approach the UK authorities with a plan…

On that topic, the other day I applied for citizenship in Australia, and they asked me if I have a criminal record. I honestly didn’t know that was still required.

Quite seriously, most Pikitup depots in Johannesburg collect recyclabes in separate hoppers or other containers. These are then fed into various recycling processes. They will accept “e-waste” along with the usual tins, plastic, glass, and paper. They also take old cooking oil, used car oil.

You have to separate this out and get it to them. You don’t have to separate the different plastics, but you do have to separate plastics from glass and so on.

If you don’t separate and just stick everything in the same bin as your waste food, garden refuse etc then it all goes into landfill. They don’t rummage through your general waste to see what can be salvaged (the guys who come around to dig in your bins do, but they only take lightweight items).

So I divert most packaging, most food containers, all empty glass bottles into recycling bins that I keep. When they are full I drive down to Pikitup. This substantially reduces the amount of trash we put out and which goes into landfill. Some weeks the amount we have is so small that we don’t bother to put it out.

Indeed. I produce a full municipal bin of mostly empty plastic containers within every 7 days… our recycling is picked up every 2 weeks, so I actually need a second bin to help with the volume.

Meanwhile, the main general bin is hardly half full. Once you remove all the plastic and foil and paper, your general waste is quite low.

We have 3 wheelie bins, one for glass, one for plastic and one for the general trash, because the tins are not that much, we have a smaller bin for it.

The trash bin gets collected once a week, but they might as well only collect it once every 2 weeks since it is hardly half full every week.

Then once a month or so, we call a lady who comes to collect the recycling stuff, it costs us nothing. Two or so months ago,for some reason our local recycling place stopped taking cardboard boxes and I still can’t get a clear answer why.

For years now we have our recycling on Tuesdays, black bins on Monday.

I use the recycling for everything that can be recycled, wires (copper), PC parts, lights bulbs. Everything.
If they don’t want it it is left … that has not happened yet.

So we are doing our part.

Also have two young chaps and a bakkie who, for free, takes anything that can be of any value. Your scrap is their business.

Desco are the big electronic component recyclers. They have a container at every Makro store. You shove your appliances etc. through a chute so no one can raid the contents.
