With all this loadshedding... might as well just go off-grid

Not to debunk the lessons of history but I think the old stuck up Capetonians are holed up in the castle but there’s also quite a lot going on outside the castle as well (with the mass exodus of Saffers relocating here)
We bought a middle class house in the peninsula and renovated it. Now the neighbour and his neighbour are revamping their houses. Builders all over the place…

At least one thing I can say for Cape Townians, is that they aren’t racist. They do, after all, hate everyone equally

Ba-dum-tish!

This probably depends on suburb to suburb. The one where we stay is great. For example at the start of Feb we’ve had our annual community braai and in a neighbourhood with only 192 houses, at least 100 people came. Kids and grownups. Many new residents came to meet their neighbours but a lot of those that’s been here for 35+ years also came. One lady that has moved into a nursing home last year still made the effort to come this year. She’s even managed to organise someone to sponsor trees for our one park, even though she doesn’t stay here anymore.

To make new “huisvriende” would obviously take a bit more effort on the side of both parties but reaching out isn’t a sin! We are good friends with many of our neighbours. Having kids helps to get you to mingle.

I do agree that the salaries and all is more in Gauteng. And in Cpt cost of living is higher. Agreed.

Last month i was on a business trip to Gauteng, and the sheer amount of driving that we did to get from one place to the other is mind blowing. So, if you take the cost of fuel, and time spend in traffic, effetely doing nothing, I think, that at the end of the day its about equal.

I guess it depends on the type of work you do.
If you are in the work from home / hybrid office camp travelling and time lost to traffic might not affect you.

But I do get your point, I am in a lucky position where my trip to work regardless if its peak traffic or no traffic always takes between 15-20 mins. (rural-ish area)
But lets be honest, the traffic in CPT is also terrible…
I have not spent a lot of time in CPT traffic but the little I have in rental cars were not fun.

With that said I feel for anyone that spends more than say 1 hour per day travelling to work and back (Or in working hours for work) I really hate driving around…

And that is why Cpt is going “off-grid” … cause we can.

AND … because Cpt is a “trade port”, more corporations will want to move here to “trade” cause we are “off-grid” … and then the “workers” (replace “or” with “a” and a “n”) (me being PC there see) can commute from their possies in “their beloved Gauteng” weekly … cause they will then never be able to afford to live here at all anymore.

Stay in your Gauteng man … we’ve got this.
