The big picture:

Having been in industrial automation I see a similar development wrt connectivity.
Many vendors supply their equipment but try to keep you tied to their apron strings. This flies in the face of today’s world of connectivity so I’m watching to see which one of the offerings is becoming dominant (which is the way these things pan out…)
In the industrial automation industry the big players provided everything, from controllers to SCADA etc. This provided a risk free choice for customers but not ideal since it was impossible for one vendor to be the best in every field.
This was before Ethernet however which has turned this world upside down.
