Maybe a police report to be submitted to, or an affidavit… cuts a few more fake reports out.

The majority would be legit. The exception not.

A better strategy may indeed be to let them work, and then trace them, and use that to find the reseller and ultimately the thief.
A database for checking if a device was stolen sounds like a good idea though. I’ll mention it to the sales guy.
good idea @plonkster … but who is going to police that - maybe if the big names would get together and work out a strategy; leaving it to the fuzz might be like fighting for peace
