Lode Runner, the old 1980/90 PC game, the original - maybe someone can help me, it’s long ago, but I faintly remember that on a 8086 desktop PC [IBM?] there were two kinds of chips, a 10something and another and Lode Runner could only be played on the slower of the two… wow man, wasted many a good evening even building other levels blah blah blah
My son who was never going to be a ‘jock’ sports star at school got into gaming with other kids at school. This produced a friendship that has lasted for life. Even online connections became mates.
So much for the ‘computer nerds’ put down at the time.
PS: And no need for typing lessons
I just remember there was the 8086, and then they made a castrated version with an 8-bit bus that was called the 8088. There was also an 80186, introduced in 1982, but it was quite rare. Most people had the speed issue when moving to the 80286, which ran at 12Mhz, later 20Mhz, while the original XT ran at 4.77Mhz.
You can still play the game for free online (alone with MANY other old games), see this link: https://www.retrogames.cz/play_079-NES.php
No registration nothing to install, just visit the site and gooi pappa! Brought back so many memories…
Fun fact, did you know that in 1985 and 1985 the best-selling book for two straight years was the Strategy guide for Super Mario Bro’s, and that the first domain name (symbolics.com) was also regsitered in 1985? Do yourself a favour and check out the https://www.symbolics.com website, they have dedicated the page to storing cool information about the internet and advancement of technology since the internet began (Internet Timeline) and access to information became easier and faster.
