Lithium Ion EV batteries

I have a friend that got himself 2 lithium Ion cells that seemingly comes from a Jaguar BEV.

I cant find any charging specs for these units on the net (but I know my searching skills suck)

They will be vehicle mounted for a camping setup.

How would you charge these cells in terms of charging volts, floating volts etc?

I don’t suppose a vehicle alternator is suitable for them?

Would they require a solar regulator with a Lithium profile like Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries need? He currently just wants to solar charge them and only has a PWM at the moment but I also cannot see if this has a lithium battery option.

11v battery, less than I thought.
Jaguar I-Pace 2.6kWh, 11V, 236AH Battery module (Used).

The seller advised that floating voltage should be around 12,4 - 12,6 and that a PWM controller may be used. Didn’t say if it must have a lithium profile.

He also said that an alternator voltage is too high and that a dc2dc charge is preferred.

Well, it says JLR on the box, and it is made by LG Chem. Looks right too. It is probably more accurate to say they are Lithium Ion modules rather than cells, otherwise they would measure a mere 4V or so.

They are apparently 4P3S, so around 11.5V nominal. Not great if you wanted a 12V drop-in. Max charge voltage would be no more than 12.6V (4.2V per cell), and if there is any imbalance, that would already be looking for trouble.

It’s definitely not an ideal 12V replacement.

Also, don’t show him this.

Lithium Ion with a 3.6V nominal voltage usually have a max of 4.1V per cell (12.3V per pack). You definitely want to use a programmable CC/CV charger with CV set to 12.3V.

Also, these modules usually require an external BMS, which would be highly recommended with Lithium Ion chemistries.

Ai jai jai this could be a very bad thing!

Thanks for sharing Plonkster.

Thank you Justin. Yes I also suspected these modules does not have a BMS.

I need to ask him where he got them. Hopefully for free. I will not risk those in my vehicle.

About 3 years ago my mother in law bought 4 refurbished Narada batteries of 10Kwh each for a bargain price of R28k at the time.

I could find nothing on the internet about them and I think some member here or on the 4x4 Forum knew something about them. None had BMS’s in.

Despite me warning her about warranties, fly by night sellers, cell imbalances etc, she went ahead and bought them anyway.

Three of them packed up within 2 years and the seller disappeared.
