How South Africa's energy transition compares to others

In 2023, renewables (including rooftop solar systems) accounted for 12.5% of South Africa’s electricity supply, according to Ember. That share will increase a little more this year.

Meanwhile, the world now gets more than 30% of its electricity from renewables. Some regions are leading, including Latin America (Brazil and Uruguay) and Europe.

Thanks Nick! I think the forumites here are all converts to RE.
The bigger picture of adoption of RE is up to the big players. We can help with our own energy usage but the governments of the world have to buy in and they can really make a difference. (e.g. Wind farms are only viable with big installations: The small RE wind business has collapsed :frowning: )

Indeed Richard. Here’s hoping!

Interesting, because 12.5% is not enough to give us 120odd days without load shedding.

Does that 12.5% include these schemes we see where a big solar farm goes up, but all it’s output is already pre-bought by a mine?

12.5% includes everything, including household solar output and self-generation (Ember’s estimates, using Eskom and NERSA data).
