I’ve been living ‘off grid’ (give or take) for some weeks now but not today!
The art knowing when to cave in will never be fully mastered…
Even Gauteng.
In 2 weeks time I only reached 100% SOC twice. Rain was horrible.
I had to resort to the grid only once though to top up batteries from 15% - 60% (it rained like 3 days straight)
From thereon we managed with some load management. So I almost want to say I am about 90% off the grid.
The load management was nothing hectic and we did not even have to revert to the backup gas geyser. We are three adults in the house.
I have 20Kwh worth batteries but man, another 10 would give me almost total independence.
I was about to say “welcome to Gauteng”. It’s a been a stinker of a time up here.
You won’t believe how miserable I am in such weather. I don’t even want to be friends with myself. It makes me very depressed.
I need sun and a warm climate.
This is even more dire with lead acid batteries. I’m one of the dinosaurs who still has these.
Apparently with the best of these batteries their lifespan is limited by not getting them fully charged during the winter. This was brought to my attention by a colleague in the cold northern hemisphere.
