Feeding back to the grid, Mybroadband article

Was just chatting on WA about this.

Since 2008, if one where to listen to where CoCT was going, it all was open and clear.

It is not black and white.
Can they do it simpler? Yes.

But it gets complicated if one must allow each and every house the opportunity to feed back.

To properly do it, Do it once do it right, the City needs a Smart Grid.
And THAT costs a small fortune to upgrade what is today.

So early uptakes are going to cost more.

My colleague recently had a system installed and the installer started the registration process for SSEG without export. He received a mail from CoCT with the commissioning approval, but he needs to have a new meter installed. It seems CoCT is forcing residents to install new meters. There is no indication as to the cost or anything. He mailed the contact e-mail address to request more info.

The letter also stated that he is not allowed to connect the system to the grid before the meter has been installed, but the installer already commissioned/signed it off. Although I have some reservations regarding the installation.

I will be following his process to hopefully make my future registration easier.

The meter that is required for " no export" is installed at NO COST to the property owner, it is called a “smart meter”, I think it is more tolerant of the occasional feed back, due to a large loads switching off. Yes, I don’t understand the need for not switching on your high cost system, until the meter is installed, there is a long delay, as the subcontractors are way behind, anyway they have already issued you a “commissioning approval letter”, just think it is bureaucratic mumbo jumbo

I will update once he received his feedback from CoCT. I wonder, will this no export smart meter be able to handle export in future or will you then require another meter at your cost?

Correct!

This is the new CoCT PAYG meter.
It doesn’t cost the home owner to have it installed so better to get it installed.
It plugs into the base (with connectors) of previous PAYG meters so rewiring is not required if you have this.
NB: This meter will never credit you no matter which way power flows!

Indeed. CoCT has a company they always use to do conversions from post-paid to prepaid. I’m having some brain fog this morning so I cannot remember their name. Anyway, two guys show up, they fit the meter, about halfway through one of them leaves and turns the power off in the street, they rewire your panel, an hour later it is done. No cost to you.

If you have a really old prepaid meter, they sometimes replace it anyway. Still costs nothing.

Edit: Elex Khanyisa. They use Elex Khanyisa. All I need to do is post it… and the name will come afterwards.

Yes. If you want to get this installed (and you’re in CoCT land) phone them up and they will make an appointment with you.
